Newborn baby checklist
Getting ready: newborn clothes
As you approach the final trimester, it's time to prepare all your infant essentials. In the first few weeks, your baby will mostly wear sleepsuits, which are easier to put on than regular clothes. These one-piece suits cover the arms, legs, and feet and often have poppers down the front for easy access. Stock up on at least four or five sleepsuits, preferably with integrated mittens to prevent your baby from scratching their delicate skin. You can also find sleepsuits with zips for quicker and easier nappy changes.
Bodysuits are another must-have for keeping your baby cosy. Opt for bodysuits with wide envelope-style necklines that can be pulled off down the body or over the head—ideal for those messy moments – ideal when you’re dealing with a messy nappy. Purchasing bodysuits in packs of seven ensures you always have a clean one on hand.
Dressing your newborn for the weather
In this region, the climate often means a coat isn’t really needed. However, it's still important to keep your newborn warm. Layer a knitted cardigan over sleepsuits and vests for added warmth. Opt for front-fastening cardigans, as newborns often dislike having clothes pulled over their heads.
Young babies can quickly get hot or cold, so a hat is essential for regulating their body temperature. A set of four hats will be perfect for your newborn’s wardrobe.
Shoes and accessories for your baby
While mini-me shoes might look adorable, babies don't need proper shoes until they start walking. Instead, choose soft, flexible booties that won’t restrict their growing feet. For colder days, booties can be worn over socks.
Cosy socks will keep your baby’s feet warm and protected. A multi-pack of colourful, eye-catching socks will ensure you always have spare pairs and make it easier to spot any that fall off.
Dribble bibs are a must-have for mopping up milk and food goo, keeping your baby’s clothes clean and dry. Adorable bandana-style bibs are not only practical but also add a stylish touch to your baby's outfit.
Sleep gear for your little one
How well your baby sleeps is a top concern for new parents. A baby sleeping bag can help your newborn sleep longer since it can’t be kicked off like a blanket. Always have a spare sleeping bag for nighttime mishaps.
Having a couple of blankets on hand is useful for layering in the pram or swaddling at night. Choose blankets with large holes for added breathability.
A comforter can also be a great help in soothing your baby to sleep. To make it more effective, place the comforter on your skin for a few hours so it picks up your scent, then put it in the crib with your baby (removing it once they fall asleep). It's wise to have a spare comforter in case the original one gets lost.
